Engelszell Trappist Weiße Hell gets ATP-label

Since late summer of 2018 Michael Hehenberger has been the new brew master of the monastery of Engelszell in Upper Austria. He got the task to develop new types of beer and to bring them on the market. If you have a look at the region where the monastery is located you can easily see that wheat beer has been drunken for a long time there and the people still enjoy to drink it. After talking to the local people especially to the local fire brigade, we recognized that the community members want a light coloured wheat beer. „It should not have a high alcohol content as the others!“, said many of them. Therefore you have to know that people in Austria do not drink strong ales very often. They are used to drink beers with an alcohol content of about 5%vol. But also the growing tourism for example the danube cruise ships and the bycicle riders who are visiting Engelhartszell where looking for a beer which has an typical alcohol content for the region. Out of that facts we decided to brew a wheat beer with an alcohol content of about 4,9%vol. At first we want to sell this beer just local at our shop in the monastery and in some restaurants in the village of Engelhartszell. The golden colour and the balanced body of the beer is a result of the mixture of wheat-, pilsener- and cara malt. At the beginning of the boiling process and into the Whirlpool we add hops from the Mühlviertel. Out of that the beer gets a slight bitterness and hop aroma. For fermentation we use our typical yeast. After two test batches of about 30l we were ready to create a final recipe.

Engelszell Trappist Weiße Hell: Glas and label

The label has nearly the same look as our others because of the brand recognition.

We decided to choose this new kind of glass to vary from the common wheat beer glasses.

In Austria and in the south of Germany the people are used to buy their beer in 0,5l bottles, but we will keep to our 0,33l Vichy bottles for our wheat beer. We do this because we see the constant trend to fill beers in 0,33l bottles even in Austria.

Engelszell Trappist Weiße Hell: Future

We are very curious how this new beer will be received from the visitors of the monastery and the people in our region. Finally we can say that this was a tough and extensive project for us.

As we say in german: „Hopfen und Malz Gott erhalts!“
