Sustainable production of electric power in the monastery of Engelszell.

Around the year 1970 the monastery has built two hydroelectric power stations. Both are named after archangels, „Michael“ and „Gabriel“. These two power stations are located in the forest, which belongs to the Trappists, next to the monastery. They provide the whole monastery with electric power. Especially the liqueur production, the brewery and the heating plant need most of the electricity during the production time. For example, the brewery has an electric steam generator which provides the steam for the mashing and boiling process. This kind of steam generation is not very common in Austria because at the time most of the breweries use fossil fuels to generate steam.

Power plants

Both power plants were restored and improved in 2004. Today „Michael“ produces about 100 kW and „Gabriel“ about 60 kW. These values can drop very quickly if there is no rain. In summer 2018 the monastery had to buy electric energy, because of the drought in Upper Austria and some other parts in Europe.
